BEFORE YOUR VISIT

We Want You to Feel Comfortable and Prepared

At Skinfocused Dermatology, our goal is to make every visit smooth, stress-free, and transparent. We want you to know exactly what to expect before you arrive, so there are no surprises.

Whether you’re joining us for a medical appointment, a total body skin exam, or a cosmetic procedure, understanding a few simple steps ahead of time helps us deliver the safest, most effective experience possible. It also ensures that you feel informed, comfortable, and ready for your visit.

Our team is here to answer any questions along the way. We’re committed to creating a welcoming environment where your concerns are heard, your goals are respected, and your skin health is our top priority.

What to Know Before Your Medical Dermatology Appointment

  1. Arrive with Clean Skin: If you are coming in for a medical skin consultation or treatment, please come with clean, makeup-free skin. This allows us to better assess your skin’s condition and helps us make the most accurate diagnosis. For a complete skin exam, please avoid wearing nail polish as well.

  2. Wear Comfortable Clothing: Depending on the area of concern, we may need to examine parts of your body, such as your back, chest, or scalp. Loose, easily removable clothing is ideal to help facilitate a thorough evaluation.

  3. Bring Your Medical History: If you have a history of skin conditions (e.g., eczema, psoriasis, skin cancer), or if you’re on medications that may affect your skin, please bring a list of your medications or have them available. This information helps us identify potential causes for your symptoms and make the best treatment recommendations.

  4. Document Changes in Your Skin: If you’ve noticed any changes in your skin (e.g., new moles, growths, changes in the size or appearance of existing moles), try to note when and where the changes occurred. This information can be crucial in diagnosing any potential skin conditions, including skin cancer.

  5. Bring Any Relevant Test Results or Reports: If you’ve had previous dermatology exams, biopsies, or lab tests, please bring any relevant reports. This will help us track your medical history and monitor any changes.

  6. Be Prepared for a Possible Skin Biopsy: If we determine that a skin biopsy is necessary (for example, to check for skin cancer), we will discuss the procedure with you beforehand. It’s a simple and generally well-tolerated procedure.

What to Know Before a Cosmetic Procedure (Injectables, Lasers, etc.)

If you’re visiting us for a cosmetic treatment, there are a few important things to know to ensure the best results:

Planning and Scheduling: Please schedule your filler appointment with the possibility of bruising in mind. While most patients recover quickly, please plan accordingly, especially if you have an upcoming event or special occasion. Ideally your appointment would be at least 2 weeks prior to the special event to allow for full resolution of any bruising or swelling that may occur.

AVOID dental work, teeth cleanings, and COVID vaccines/boosters within 2 weeks of your filler procedure (before and after) in order to minimize the chance of a potential infection or inflammation.

Potential Downtime: Before any procedure, we will review what to expect—including any potential downtime—so you can plan and feel fully informed before moving forward. Many cosmetic treatments, such as injectables or lasers, may involve some downtime or minor side effects (e.g., swelling, bruising, redness).

How to Minimize Bruising: Bruising can be an expected, though frustrating, side effect of injectable treatments. When it occurs, bruising can last several days, and it may be difficult to cover with makeup. To minimize the chance of bruising, we recommend that you start taking an arnica supplement 2 days prior to the procedure (take 3 tablets three times daily).

In addition, you may want to avoid certain vitamins and supplements for approximately 1 to 2 weeks prior to your appointment. Please see the list below.

What Else You Can Do Pre-Treatment: It may be helpful to avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before your appointment, as it can increase the risk of bruising and swelling. And, if you're having a treatment in the facial area, avoid waxing or threading for at least 48 hours before your appointment to prevent irritation or inflammation.

The Appointment: Please come to the appointment with a clean face (ideally no makeup). If you have a history of dizziness or fainting during medical procedures, please share that information with our staff and be sure to eat and drink prior to your visit.

Post-Treatment Care: After your procedure, we’ll provide you with detailed aftercare instructions. Some basic recommendations:

  • Apply ice packs gently (do not press too hard) on and off every few minutes for about 20 minutes immediately following your procedure.

  • There may be moderate swelling, redness, and/or bruising. These are normal and expected symptoms.

  • You may apply topical Arnica cream/gel or take Arnica tablets to help decrease the amount of bruising.

  • It is normal for injected areas to feel sore and tender as you move or touch your face.

  • It is normal for you to feel hard lumps under the skin in the areas of injection. Do NOT massage the injected areas for at least 2 weeks.

  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours to reduce the risk of swelling and bruising. You may resume other normal activities immediately.

  • Avoid any dental work and dental teeth cleanings for at least 2 weeks after your filler treatment to minimize the chance of infections.

  • Call the office IMMEDIATELY if you have any severe pain, severe and extensive bruising, pustules, or visual disturbances.

Following these steps is essential to achieving optimal results and minimizing potential side effects.

If significant bruising occurs due to a filler treatment, we do offer a complimentary laser treatment (ideally 48 hours after the procedure) to hasten its resolution. If you have any questions about your instructions or your post-treatment experience, please reach out.  We are here to help guide you through the process.

By following these guidelines, you’ll help us provide you with the best possible care and results during your visit.

To minimize bruising, approximately
1 to 2 weeks before your appointment, you may want to stop taking the products or supplements listed below.
